Tips to multiply the effects of massage: it’s not just stretching

Whether you’re tempted by a traditional Thai massage or a classic oil massage, in either case you can try the following tips to maximise their effects.

1. A cold shower will invigorate you

Never take a hot shower after a massage, no matter how much you like it. You should also save a warm relaxing bath for another day. Massages stimulate the blood circulation as much as hot water.

Showering in hot water after a massage can raise blood pressure, cause dizziness and slow muscle recovery. Cold water is recommended to soothe stimulated muscles. If you are not a big hardier, at least treat yourself to a summer shower.

2. Do not shower immediately after the massage

After a massage, you may be tempted to go straight to the bath to wash up. However, it’s best to wait a while, because if you quickly jump into the shower, you may feel faint. Instead, lie down and give yourself a rest. Also, don’t take a hot shower right before your massage. This can also cause dizziness. It’s dangerous, so don’t take any chances.

3. Don’t forget to stretch your whole body

Massage will have the best effect if you give your body a stretch every day, not just before or after the treatment. Of course, if you want to stretch before/after the massage, keep at least an hour apart. Stretching exercises will relieve pain, muscle tension and improve flexibility. 4. Do not eat heavy food after the massage

Fatty, spicy, overly salty and overly spicy foods do not mix well with massage, so avoid them. Forget about semi-finished products, fast food and sweets. Eating them would exhaust you. An hour and a half before the massage, a lighter meal such as a bowl of fruit or soup is recommended. Avoid alcohol, caffeine, nicotine and carbonated drinks. Plain water or herbal tea will suffice.
