How does a sedentary job affect your health?

Despite the availability of an increasing number of ergonomic chairs, a significant percentage of people suffer health damage from sedentary work. Sitting all day is dangerous and needs to be talked about. It may be difficult to imagine that such a trivial thing can endanger our health. Find out how to prevent the negative effects and keep yourself fit for as long as possible.

Stiff everything?

It’s not just your legs and spine that suffer when you sit, but also your hips, arms, neck and neck. Headaches from the cervical spine are no exception. If you’re hunched over looking at a monitor all day, no wonder. Sitting for long periods of time causes shortening of the hip flexors, and improper positioning in a poor quality chair leads to disc compression. This is the onset of premature degeneration of the musculoskeletal system and chronic pain.

Weakened muscles and legs

People with sedentary jobs often underestimate physical activity. Insufficient or no movement can lead to muscle atrophy. Without sitting muscles, you lose your natural fitness and can easily injure yourself.

Overweight to obesity

Movement causes the release of lipoprotein lipase molecules that help process ingested sugars and fats. When you spend most of your day sitting behind a screen, the release of these molecules is reduced and you can gain weight more quickly. There’s also a risk of developing metabolic syndrome.

Anxiety and depression

Movement, that’s life and energy. A sedentary stereotype without physical activity has a negative effect on the human psyche. Swimming, running, yoga, zumba and other sports release hormones of happiness – endorphins. At the end of the day, you may feel tense and nervous after work, but movement will quickly get you back in shape and in a good mood. So if you sit a lot, it’s not just your physical frame that suffers, but also your mental health.

Heart disease

Excessive sitting and lack of exercise can also affect your heart. Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of death in the world. One study came up with interesting results.

Men who spent more than 23 hours a week watching TV had a 64% higher risk of dying from heart disease than men who watched only 11 hours of TV. In addition to the aforementioned problems, diabetes or deep vein thrombosis are also lurking.

Take control of your daily routine – what can you do to keep sitting still?
